Triage Negligence in Los Angeles Emergency Rooms

In a Los Angeles Emergency Room (ER), one would assume that all patients can be considered in an emergency state, but that is where triage comes into play. Triage is where a patient checks in and is sorted through in order of importance. It is not first come, first serve in the E.R and there is a method followed by hospital staff that labels each patient that has checked in by importance or severity of injuries / symptoms. Usually, negligence in an emergency room will start with triage errors.

When triage perform a misdiagnoses of  the intensity or the need for immediate treatment by a patient it is considered Emergency Room Negligence and can cause further injuries or even the wrongful death of the patient in the waiting room. In some cases, a patient may make it past triage, and be placed into a room only to wait for hours before they actually see a doctor. The lengthy times of waiting can affect the permanent damage done to a patient who is suffering from a serious condition. For examples, in cases where someone may be having chest pains, a heart attack could be the end result of a long waiting period at the ER.

Los Angeles Emergency Rooms:  Under Staffed and Offer Misdiagnosis

If the error does not happen at triage or the time it takes to get the patient into the treatment centers than there is the issue of there not being enough certified staff available to treat the number of patients in need of immediate care. There is an issue of negligence that begins at the hiring stage conducting by the hospital. A Harvard University study showed that there was a significant lack of qualified part-time workers in the medical field and that they were determined to be liable for many of the negligent errors that caused the injuries of many patients.

Some of the most common mistakes that happen in a busy emergency room may include an improper evaluation of a patient’s condition to disorder, a diagnosis that is completely wrong or too late to save the patient from death or sever injury, a false read or conducting of lab tests, wrong medications being prescribed or administered, a failure to monitor or restrain a patient, and faulty blood transfusions in which the blood was contaminated or not properly infused.

Types of Emergency Room Errors Can Include:

  • Administration of wrong medication;
  • Administration of wrong medication dosage;
  • Administration of wrong treatment;
  • Failure to make a diagnosis;
  • Injury caused by inappropriate movements;
  • Misdiagnosis of injuries or illnesses; and
  • Neglect in care.
